Playing Matchmaker

An especially frivolous post tonight, inspired by Lena’s comment on my review of NARS Angela. I mentioned in the post that Angela was a perfect match for one of my favorite nail polishes, OPI Ate Berries in the Canaries, and Lena wrote, “I used to pair up lippies and polishes and even labeled them, so I do understand this type of joy.” I’m not sure I’ve ever consciously matched my lipstick to my nail polish, but Lena’s comment inspired me to go through my stash and find some color pairings. Not all of these are perfect matches, but it turns out that I have more near-matches than I expected! Alas, I don’t have any blue or green lipstick to go with my mint and cobalt polishes…

Coppery brown: Deborah Lippmann Superstar and Revlon Lacquer Balm in Coy.

Pale orange: Essie Resort Fling and Revlon Matte Balm in Mischievous.

Dark red with gold shimmer: OPI Innie Minnie Mightie Bow and Maybelline Ruby Star.

Nude: Milani Vanilla Almond, Revlon Elegant, and Maybelline Nude Lust.

Fuchsia sparkle: Zoya Gilda and Revlon Adorned.

Medium cool pink: OPI If You Moust You Moust and MAC Pink Nouveau.

Dark plum: Essie Bahama Mama and Topshop Get Me Bodied.

Metallic lavender: NYX Castle and Zoya Julie.

Midtone lilac: Essie Play Date and Maybelline Lilac Flush.
Pink-red-coral: Chanel Tapage and Milani Flamingo Pose.
Raspberry red: Revlon Cherries in the Snow and…Revlon Cherries in the Snow! The classic lipstick-polish couple.
And the pairing that started it all, magenta: OPI Ate Berries in the Canaries and NARS Angela.
After a week of producing words, I’ve enjoyed composing a post with almost none. Have an excellent weekend!

  1. Love this! I literally squee-d(?) as I was scolling down. And I am happy to hear that my geeky comment was the inspiration! *blushed*Now my secret is out, I tell you I did actually lable them – placed tiny blue tapes on the nail polish bottles and wrote the corresponding lippy names. Then, I would go on a quest for a poor thing that didn't have a proper mate. Pretty geeky, right? Good times. ;)I think everything here is impressively matched. I want to raid your nail polish stash, too. LOLI once read an article that the Revlon founder (who was a ruthless businessman) started this matching lipstick & nail polish thing, which was so fascinating!

  2. Aww, I'm glad you enjoyed this post! Thanks for inspiring it. 🙂 I love hearing about the ways that other people geek out over makeup. I do remember that you once posted about the Cherries in the Snow pair!

  3. Ohhh, this post is SO PLEASING. It makes me want to go through my stash and look for pairings… I'm afraid I might not find any, though, since I'm all about classic lipstick colors, but my nail polishes are mostly blue and green and gray. Also, I tend to prefer shimmer-free lip products, but shimmery nail polishes, go figure!

  4. Actually, this post isn't a great representation of the polish colors I wear most often! Like you, I wear a lot of green and blue polish, as well as some darker purples and taupey purple grays. The polishes in this post that have gotten the most wear in the past year are Tapage, Play Date, Elegant, and Ate Berries in the Canaries.
