Low-Buy Progress Report #4: April

I’m told that it’s May, though you wouldn’t know it from the weather, which has been utterly miserable for over a week and promises to carry on being utterly miserable for another week to come. Every day is the same: between 45 and 60 degrees, completely overcast, raining on and off, humidity around 90%. After… Read More Low-Buy Progress Report #4: April

Let Us Now Praise Formula X Enigma

Until recently, teal was one of my least favorite colors. It unsettled me in the same way that fuchsia used to: both are amphibious, ill-defined colors. But one swipe of fuchsia lipstick in the summer of 2011 banished my unease forever, and I’ve just experienced a similar conversion to teal. It started when I looked… Read More Let Us Now Praise Formula X Enigma

@lipstickenthusiasm influenced me to buy Covergirl Clean Fresh Tinted Lip Balm in Bliss You Berry, one of the Clinique Black Honey knockoffs that have popped up since the iconic ‘90s lipstick went viral on TikTok. When I saw Leanne’s photos, I immediately thought of another Black Honey-adjacent shade: Glossier Ultralip in Ember. I love the color of Ember but find the Ultralip formula drying, so I hoped Bliss You Berry would turn out to be a more comfortable dupe. As you can see from my swatch photos in the fourth image, the two lipsticks are similar indeed! (Top to bottom: one swipe of Ember, one swipe of BYB, a few swipes of BYB.) The Covergirl packaging is very Glossier-esque, too; I suspect that’s no accident.
Three coats of Cirque Colors Jade Jelly topped with stickers from the Deco Miami Wildflower set. Very cottagecore! I think my favorite sticker is the little pocket watch. Jade Jelly sort of gives me lobster hands, but I love it nonetheless.
LA highlights pt. 2: food (mostly desserts tbh) and drink. Not pictured is the best pad thai I’ve ever had, from Pearl’s Thai Eatery in Pasadena, because I didn’t think to take a photo until I’d devoured half of it and no one wants to see a half-eaten plate of noodles. So good, though. Thank you to @quatrelina for recommending Donut Friend (eighth photo)!
Art Deco sightings from last week’s LA trip. 🌴
February, belatedly. 💘 Shoutout to @presidents for recommending the Making Knowing: Craft in Art exhibition at the Whitney; we caught it a week before it closed and it was great!
