My boyfriend recently left his job in the UK, which is great news relationship-wise: we met in my former graduate program and have been long-distance since I started my current program seven (!) years ago, and now we’ll actually be able to live together for more than a couple months at a time. On a shallower level, however, this will be my last transatlantic makeup review for a while. Before my boyfriend returned to the US earlier this month, I sent him to the Kiko store in the Birmingham train station, where he very kindly swatched a few shades of the Velvet Passion matte lipstick line. (Weirdly, there’s another Kiko store five minutes away, in the enormous mall attached to the station.) Here’s the full display of the lipsticks, which launched last year. Each one retails for £7 (about $9).
The shade I chose was 319 (Chocolate), a medium plummy brown that feels very Jazz-Age-casual to me. The Velvet Passion lipstick bullets have an odd squared-off tip that resembles a fountain pen; this review points out that they look identical to the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipsticks, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were made in the same factory. Overall, the lipstick looks and feels more luxe than I’d expect from a brand with drugstore pricing.

Because of the slight sheerness of the formula, 319 seems to look different on everyone. I’ve seen reviews in which it pulls brown or greige; on me, though, it’s a brown-tinged purple reminiscent of (but much warmer than) NYX Up the Bass. (Interestingly, the brown and nude shades in Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution formula seem to have the same translucency.) 319 isn’t patchy—the product applies pretty evenly, without a lot of slip—but it doesn’t have the color payoff I’d expect from a MAC or Urban Decay matte lipstick. For that matter, its finish is closer to satin than true matte. It feels comfortable on my lips, but it transfers easily onto cups and straws and needs touch-ups almost hourly, which is a pain.
For the look below, I used ColourPop Super Shock Shadow in Dance Party all over my lids, blending out the crease with ABH Buon Fresco and adding some more Buon Fresco to the lower lashline. My blush is Urban Decay Rapture. The bluer purple of the eyeshadow clashes with the warm purple of the lipstick, but I don’t really mind:
Yay for your boyfriend coming back to the US! I am sadly familiar with transatlantic relationships, though for not quite so long as you two. I was so impressed with the one Kiko store I've been in. Most of the packaging is high quality and they have a good array of products. And are totally unavailable in Canada. It's so hard to be a rampant consumer in the Great White North (but I can buy maple flavoured Cheerios, so yay?).

I'm glad things are looking up on the personal front! 🙂 I love Kiko although I haven't bought anything in a long time. The packaging is really something isn't it! I think it's the colour – the fuchsia I have from them (older line) was searingly opaque always. I think for drugstore price they put out fantastic products.

Yeay for the return of the boyfriend! I love Kiko and their lipsticks usually work well for me but I have not been lucky with any of their packaging. it probably differs from one lipstick to another, but the ones I have, while they look sleek, they feel very clunky and cheap. Like the caps don't even close smoothly, i.e. \”click\” well. I'm now tempted to visit Kiko though and feel this magnetic clasp you're talking about!

At least we weren't transatlantic for all seven of those years! We were in the same time zone while he was finishing grad school (he was four years ahead of me). Still, it's been way too long.Kiko wasn't available in the US either until very recently. There are now a few in the New York area, which is good to know: I think I'll be needing more of their stick eyeshadows.

This is the first Kiko lip product I've tried, but I've been really impressed with most of the eye makeup I have from them. Such a beautiful assortment of colors, in (mostly) very pigmented formulas.

I was never tempted to buy a Kiko lipstick before this one, and the packaging probably had something to do with it. The magnetic clasp is very cool, though! I love playing with it.

Yay that your boyfriend is back in the US! I love that he swatched for you – that's really, really sweet.I still haven't tried anything from Kiko! It's too bad the formula on this isn't great: the packaging (very Blade Runner-y, yes) and Charlotte Tilsbury-esque bullet are speaking to me. I just looked into it and it appears that there is now a Kiko store in Glasgow, so I will have to check it out when I'm there. I went into the one in Covent Garden for like one minute before I got overwhelmed by the crowds and had to leave, so I haven't given the brand a fair shot.

It was so cute! He sent me a bunch of photos from the store and waited while I waffled over my selection. For what it's worth, some of the Velvet Passion colors look a lot more pigmented than this one, so I'd say the line is definitely worth checking out. And yes, why are Kiko stores in the UK so insane? Is the brand really that popular there? I've been to the one on Oxford Street two or three times and it always feels like Sephora on Dec. 24 or something.

After completing my makeup classes by Lina, who trains best make-up lesson London I bought many makeup items to practice more, to improve my makeup skill. I got many lipsticks from Kiko. This one is my favorite from matte range. They are super smooth and so comfortable.
